Team Brooke or Team Peyton?
One Tree Hill fans continue to be divided on which leading lady belonged with Lucas Scott (Chad Michael Murray), but the one thing everyone who watched the long-running WB/CW series can agree on is that there were a million reasons why the high school basketball star was worth fighting over.
Though there was plenty of drama in Tree Hill over the course of 9 seasons, few storylines were as important as the ever-fluctuating Peyton/Lucas/Brooke triangle. And while Lucas ultimately ended up with Peyton, it turns out, that wasn’t always going to be the case.
When People’s Choice caught up with Burton at the InsideOTH Convention in North Carolina last month, we asked her if she always knew that Leyton (Peyton + Lucas, obviously) was endgame.
“No, I didn’t. I didn’t at all,” Burton revealed. “I remember, season two or season three, I was told that it was going to be Peyton and Jake that ended up together and Brooke and Lucas.”

Burton explained that the decision to end the series with Peyton and Lucas together evolved over time.
“We were all working together in different pairs and seeing where chemistry was, I mean, Chad and I just have always had a chemistry. We’ve always either love/hated each other or really love each other. And it had evolved in such a way that by the end of our time on the series, Chad was just one of my favorite people to work with ever,” said Burton. “…. At a certain point, it was kind of like, ‘Yeah, forget whatever we wanted to do before, it’s us.’”
Eventually, Brooke (Sophia Bush) ended up with Julian (Austin Nichols) and Peyton ended up with Lucas, so it all worked out, but we couldn’t help but think how life would’ve been for Peyton had she actually ended up with Jake (Bryan Greenberg). Luckily for us, and OTH fans everywhere wondering the same thing, Burton has a pretty good idea of how different Peyton’s life would have been had Jake been the one she got together with in the end.
“They’d be living in a van, going to his concerts,” Burton said. “She’d be like handing out fliers. They’d be that couple. They’d probably have a couple really bad tattoos together. That gypsy lifestyle of a musician is a totally different deal.”
In the end, Burton said, “Lucas was the stability that Peyton needed desperately.”
